MODEL TRAIN EXHIBIT: From 10am to 5pm on Saturday, the Sunset Park Masonic Lodge at 1729 Ocean Park Blvd. (between 17 and 18 streets) will be hosting a very cool model train exhibit and demonstration put on by the N’Scale Model Train Club. Each club member arrives the night before with his own train “assemblage” and together they construct a wide ranging system which includes freight and passenger trains, trestles, tunnels and meticulously detailed town and city scenes, featuring trees and other vegetation, houses, hotels, bridges, service stations and small town businesses.   Free and a treat for all ages.

As part of the street fair festivities, Elena Mary Siff will be showing at Artful. Elena has been an assemblage, collage and book artist for over 30 years. As with her work, Elena is one-of-a-kind. Her books are works of art like no other and contain charming, quirky quotes culled from Elena's extensive collection. She recently transitioned into jewelry and anyone who has seen her pieces at Artful knows her surreal and symbolic charm bracelets. Each bracelet is a miniature assemblage, created from all manner of objects and broken jewelry, taken apart and given new life. Elena believes everything can be used..."one never knows what one object will tell another. That is my method and my mantra." Elena will have new work on Saturday to be seen and enjoyed.

al-Mutanabbi Street Book Project

On March 5th 2007, a car bomb was exploded on al-Mutanabbi Street in
Baghdad. Al-Mutanabbi Street is in a mixed Shia-Sunni area. More than 30
people were killed and more than 100 were wounded. Al-Mutanabbi Street, the
historic centre of Baghdad bookselling, holds bookstores and outdoor
bookstalls, cafes, stationery shops, and even tea and tobacco shops. It has
been the heart and soul of the Baghdad literary and intellectual community.
The Al-Mutanabbi Street Coalition is issuing a call to book artists to work
on a project to “re-assemble” some of the “inventory” of the reading
material that was lost in the car bombing of al-Mutanabbi Street. The
coalition asks each Book Artist who joins the project to complete and donate
three books (or other paper material) in the course of a year, books that
reflect both the strength and fragility of books, but also show the
endurance of the ideas within them.

As in our broadside project, we will be donating one complete set of 130 to
the Iraq National Library. The other two sets will be used in conjunction
with shows of the broadsides as well as in shows of their own to raise funds
for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Each book artist will have one year from
the date they join the project to complete their three books.

The inventory of al-Mutanabbi Street was as diverse as the Iraqi population,
including literature of both Iraq and the Middle East, history, political
theory, popular novels, scholarly works, religious tracts, technical books,
poetry, mysteries; even stationery and blank school notebooks could be
purchased on this street, as well as comics, and magazines. Arabic was of
course the predominate language but books in Farsi, French, German, Spanish
and English were also represented. I imagine there were a few books in
Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, or Italian, as well as classic Greek and
Latin, Hindi, or even Russian. Your own text for this project can reflect
the multiplicity of this linguistic crossroads.

This project is both a lament and a commemoration of the singular power of
words. We ask that the work move within these parameters. We hope the books
created will use
al-Mutanabbi and its printers, writers, booksellers, and readers, as a
touchstone.

Please could you produce your book in an edition of 3, by any means: hand
printed, digital, POD etc. Do feel free to make as many more of the edition
as you want to use/sell however you want, we are asking for three copies in
total to be donated to the project. This is a broad call for any kind of
paper-based artist’s bookwork for example: Pamphlet books, Zines,
newspapers, Miniature books, Paperback, hardback, etc., Folded and sewn or
stapled sheets, Altered books, if artists want to make these, they can be 3
different versions or an edition of 3. Please make sure they are robust, not
too heavy, and able to close for packing/transport.

Please remember that the books will tour international exhibitions to raise
funds for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and a complete set will be sent to
the Iraq National Library, so please keep them as light as possible to help
save postage costs.

BEYOND BOOKS:
I have been creating unique book objects for many years. After searching long and hard for other book artists on etsy, I have found these wonderful creations. I looked specifically for unusual book structures, non-traditional materials and obvious hand work on each book. These book works attracted my attention right away. Each is unique and exists in the space between art and book. It is very difficult to locate book art on etsy as there is no category for such art. I think this work is more art than book. There is no etsy sub-category in "ART" for book art so we are all quite invisible on the huge site. Therefore I decided to start a team for book artists called The Alchemical Codex Society: Book Artists of Etsy.

We are now an elite community of book makers and hope collectors will find us more easily. There is a solid collector base for book art and numerous exhibitions of artists' books are held all over the world. So it is fitting that we are an international team. Visual artist Elena Siff creates virtual and physical space for LA artists and brings social activism through art in ‘making change’

“I am appalled by what’s happening and someone needs to bring some thoughtful art to the scene,” says Elena Siff, her voice filled with anger and despair as she talks about some of the worst environmental disasters like BP’s oil spill and Hungary’s toxic sludge disaster that have occurred in recent months. “Our world is being destroyed,” she states, as her eyes wander around the project room of 18th street Arts Center, surrounded by political art posters depicting environmental tragedies, anti-war slogans, peace signs among other artifacts.
“A lot of people gravitate towards these posters,” she says talking about her passion for studying and observing the natural world and creating art. Her eyes cast a glance on a painting hanging on the nearby wall. The poster shows twin towers standing amidst desert, surrounded by pyramids, money and arms, an image that immediately resonates with you, bringing memories of loss, pain and destruction.
For Siff, it also draws back the memory of a postcard that she found in 1979. “It was called ‘two in time’ and if you tilted it on one side you could see the twin tower and on the other a pyramid,” she says remembering how she found the artist’s dual image representation fascinating and drew inspiration for painting ‘ material world‘.
Siff who enjoys living in Santa Monica’s artistic and politically progressive community speaks about the events that led to her interest in political art. Siff had to discontinue her MFA in Film and TV studies at UCLA, after her first born was diagnosed with autism. While taking care of her son’s special needs, she witnessed the lack of opportunities that existed for people with disabilities. This led her to actively engage in promoting work of people with disabilities, specially artists. One of her art work ‘ Speaking Thunder’, an interactive installation placed at the Santa Monica Place in 1993 focused on providing opportunities for people with disabilities. “I was really interested in getting people with disabilities hired at the Santa Monica Place, but I don’t think it really happened,” she says with a look of disappointment, adding that, people with disabilities should have a chance to become valued employees.
While Siff’s interest in political art had always been there, it wasn’t until recently that she got the opportunity to work on it professionally. Thanks to the 18th Street Art Center’s residency program, Siff’s project ‘Making Change’ won an artist fellowship for 2010 theme: ‘ status report: the creative economy’. In her project, Siff addressed how the internet plays a major role in this new artistic economy and included a high degree of public engagement by setting up a virtual marketplace and a physical store housing artworks, crafts, clothing, prints, paintings and more from artists all over Los Angeles. To include artists whose works would bring diversity, Siff selected them on their responses to several questions pertaining to the relationship between art and activism and if the medium of art could be used to effectively represent political and environmental issues. The interviews of these selected artists have been documented by Siff on her blog: Art of Making Change.

Apart from being a major assemblage artist, Elena Siff also specializes in creating unique book objects. Drawn to small formats, she has been creating book art for nearly 15 years. The intricacy of work in some of her book art is both amazing and fascinating. On of her book art, titled “Art in Transit” involved her creating a series of ten trucks on which she collaged works of well known artists. She used a miniature truck as the base to haul wise words by Plato, Virgil, da Vinci, Norman Cousins, among others for life. “I took copies of artist work and put my own embellishment on them and for me it was like a collaboration with the deceased artist,” she says pointing her finger at the picture of the toy truck on the brochure. Her book art has been in many international exhibitions and can be found on Vamp and Tramp booksellers and Etsy.
Elena Siff hopes to continue making statements through her art and being the change that she wants to see.

On October 23 from 6-10 p.m., at the 18th Street Project Room, Elena Siff will have an opening reception for her project Making Change. The project room houses several artworks, crafts, clothing, prints, paintings, powerful posters, books, calendars from the Center for Political Graphics and more original art by artists all over Los Angeles. Geared towards creating social awareness about our environment and society, at project room, you will not only be inspired but also find something that resonates with you and your beliefs.

In June 2010 we created a Facebook page for the MAKING CHANGE team of Etsy activist artists and also for the MAKING CHANGE store I will open at 18th. Street Arts Center in Santa Monica from October 2 to end of December. The actual store will consist of a powerful collection of art by activist artists from Los Angeles. Activist artists outside of Los Angeles who have etsy shops will be represented as well. I will provide a list of links to the etsy on-line shops to customers who shop with me at 18th. Street Arts Center.

There will be a big art and music and beer festival on October 2nd. from 1 to 6pm and the opening of the MAKING CHANGE store will be part of this festival. I hope those in Los Angeles will celebrate with us on Oct. 2nd. and return to see what is new in the store for the next 3 months. Politics will be in the air as it is election season....many issues to discuss and much dynamic and thoughtful art to see at the MAKING CHANGE store.

DAY OF THE DEAD NICHO SHRINES

Several years ago I was in Mexico for the Day of the Dead ceremonies which were surreal and visually brilliant. Since then I have been creating my own version of nicho shrines with cartoon imagery. In many of my shrines toy figures are facing to the back of the shrine and only when one looks into the tiny mirror on the wall can one see the head of the figure which is a skull. I plan to create a series of anti-war skull shrines for the MAKING CHANGE store I will open at 18th. Street Arts Center, Santa Monica from Oct. 1st. through end of December 2010...not only is the store (which will feature art and craft with a focus on political and environmental issues) open during the time of the Day of the Dead ceremonies but it is also during the U.S. elections held in Nov. A very potent season in many ways and perfect timing for a MAKING CHANGE marketplace:

A CHARMED GARDEN of bracelets

As the roses bloom and too quickly fade in my garden I have been inspired to create more lasting blooms, so a mini flower factory is blossoming in my studio..have been collecting vintage bits and pieces of broken jewelry for years and now I know why......send me your neglected discards!

These unique charm bracelets were a big hit last summer at the Chilmark Flea Market on Martha's Vineyard Island and I plan to be there again this August with new floral fantasies...Come and say hello if you find yourself on that magic isle.
